sunday stuff

Sunday we went to church and to the lake for lunch.
It turned out to be the nicest day of the whole weekend.
Elise got to take her first ride on Grandpa's new golf cart.

She looked so cute.  This is my most favorite outfit of all time.
And I found the perfectly coordinating shoes at Target.  I love Target.

Oh hey, blue eyes.

We found her in the pantry sneaking some M&Ms.

This picture is hilarious.  I asked her what on earth she was doing and she said, "I wanted to touch my tongue to Auntie Lauren's tongue!"  Okay buddy.  And Lauren was totally okay with this.  That's love right there.  And a little gross.

We took a boat ride where Elise wanted to sit by daddy.
She had her hand wrapped around his neck the whole time.
Adorable-ness.

saturday tidbits

On Saturday we had some of our friends over for some fun.

The guys ended up by the swingset with the little girls.  So funny.

Elise was pretty excited to have her friends Nicolynn & Stella share her picnic table.

The girls loved playing outside.  Notice our neighbors sweet blow-up playground in the background -- Elise has got her eye on that thing.

Bubbles are endlessly entertaining...

We made some s'mores after dinner - I think she was sneaking marshmallows.

A beach ball  - so much fun.

paella party [a poor attempt at food blogging]

After graduation we headed back to the lake for Paella.  Paella is party food.  Especially when paired with sangria.   We used this recipe from Tyler Florence - The Ultimate Paella.  We alter it a little - we pre-cook the rice and skip the clams.  We don't enjoy clams.

The setting.

The goods.  My mom pre-measured everything so it was totally ready to go.
My mom is so awesome.

The chefs.

(What Elise did while we were making dinner.)

She's just the sweetest.

To start, cook the chicken and chorizo in olive oil.
When cooked, remove it from heat and set it aside.  We'll need it later.

Add the onion and garlic and parsley.  Saute until delicious looking.

Add the tomatoes.  Since our rice was pre-cooked, we had chicken stock nearby to add for extra juicy-ness.

Add the rice.  If you don't pre-cook the rice, the fun cooking process becomes an unbelievable long cooking process where everyone is too hungry to have fun.  Add all the rice and chicken stock and smoosh (technical term) it all in and let all the goodness sink in.

Sit back and relax like Uncle John...

Take pictures of cute people.
Mom and her littlest.

Aubrey and Erika (the graduates!) didn't even plan to coordinate their outfits.

After the rice is ready add back the chicken and chorizo.

Stir it all in and do some more smooshing.

Add the shrimp.  We're almost done!

When the shrimp is about half way done add the peas.  Ya know - for color and your daily serving of vegetables.

Stir and smoosh.  Take in the view.  It's time to eat!

Hug your cousin.

Play some bag toss.

Add the lovely garnish (parsley & lemons).

Close-up.  Just call me Pioneer Woman.

Say a little prayer.  Gotta thank Jesus for this goodness.
Peek at Elise while praying...

Serve it up!

Elise approves.  She mostly ate bread.

It was so good we'll probably do it all again this weekend with Lauren and Carl because they missed out this time.  I just love summertime at the lake.  I think my dad does too - Elise and I didn't leave for over 48 hours...I'm pretty sure everything was covered in sand.

Such a fun weekend.  We ate way too much paella, drank a little too much sangria, and had such a great time with our family.

calvin graduation

Aubrey graduated from Calvin! YAY Aubrey!

It was such a perfect weekend.
Mom & Dad and their last tuition payment ever.

Aubrey and Tyler.  Cuties.

We're missing Lauren & Carl - they're having tons of fun in Croatia.

And we saw our best buddies and cousins the VanderSluis ladies.
Kendra and Aubrey graduated together.
(me, aubrey, elise, kendra, bethany, jenna)

SUCH a happy day!  Afterwards we headed to the lake with everyone where we drank sangria and cooked Paella over the fire.   It was so delicious.  I've got a post coming about the after party.  Congratulations Aubrey!

good news and hair pics

We met with my oncologist this morning for the results of the CT scan I had last week and everything looks clear!  Hooray.   Now we're good until my next scan in November.   This month marks one year since I finished all my treatment (chemo+radiation).

Here's quite the comparison for ya - this is how much hair grows in a year:

Last year our spring break was after chemo and before my radiation started.  I was so sick of my hot wig I left it home and walked around in public with a slightly fuzzy shiny head.   Notice my drawn on eyebrows...oh my word.

A great start to the weekend.  Aubrey is graduating from Calvin so there's lots of fun things coming up.  I just wish it would warm up a little...

And as always...

mother's day & a phone dump

I just love being this sweet girl's mommy.

And I am SO blessed by my own mom - my lunch date, the reason I have somewhere to go most days, and the buyer of many of Elise's adorable clothes.  And seriously - my best buddy.  Well it might be a tie with Elise.

Mushy-ness makes me feel awkward.  Love you Mom.

Today we went to Great Grandma's house for lunch.

Elise sure loves her Grandma.

Four generations of Gootes.

And a little phone dump from the past week:

it's tulip time

It is so beautiful here this week.
We took advantage of our [finally] summer weather and headed out to Tulip Time in Holland with our friends Krissy & Nicolynn.

Pretty tulips!

aww...cute friends.

This is my kid!  Man she's cute.

We all shared Elise's first elephant ear.
She called it a "pretend doh-no (donut)"
